Italy edged Romania by 0.1 in a thrilling team final Saturday at the European Championships in Volos, Greece.

Third after preliminaries, Italy turned in a consistent performance highlighted by Vanessa Ferrari’s floor routine.

The Romanians turned in the highest scores on balance beam and floor, but had an otherwise disappointing competition. 

Preliminary leader Russia had the highest vault and bars scores, but counted two falls on balance beam.

After a silver-medal finish in the team competition, Romania bounced back to win two individual event gold medals.  Catalina Ponor ended her career with a gold on balance beam and bronze on floor exercise.  Teammate Sandra Izbasa won the gold on floor and tied for bronze on beam.

Russian Anna Grudko won the vault, while Great Britain’s Beth Tweddle picked up her first major international title on uneven bars with a meet-high 16.050.

Italy’s Vanessa Ferarri won the silver on floor exercise.

After winning the junior team title over Romania and Germany, respectively, Russia continued to dominate the junior competition in event finals.  Karina Myasnikova won the vault and uneven bars titles.  Her 15.400 on uneven bars was the highest score of the competition.  Junior all-around champion Daria Yelizarova won the beam title.

Romanians Aluissa Lacusteanu and Andreea Grigore were first and second on floor exercise, respectively.
